Is Your Air Conditioning System Getting the Job Done?
Dealing with high humidity is as big a problem as the high temperatures associated with having to cool your home. In the summer months, the high humidity can result in higher than necessary energy bills. When you are listening to the weather reports and you hear "Heat Index", humidity is behind it. Humidity is the cause of the “feels like” temperatures that are usually several degrees hotter than the actual temperature. Properly sizing and selecting your air conditioning system or equipment to deal with humidity is a little more difficult than just getting something that keeps you cool on those hot and high humid days.

When an air conditioning system is not running or being used, humidity tends to build up. Do to the air not being in a constant cycle of being conditioned, the humid air can cause mold in the walls and attic to be far more likely. If or When this happens, you have a world of new problems and illnesses that may occur. Things like your HVAC units, fire extinguishers and batteries in the smoke alarms. Your gutters and water spigots should be looked at, and of course, sprinkler units and concrete outside. Springtime is also a great time to think about your air quality and what your plans are for dealing with allergy issues. Most people today still believe there will not be a problem until there is one. This is called “reactive” thinking. Even though you know that is far better to use a scheduled maintenance plan, most or us continue to spend the bulk of our time and money operating reactively. The most common reason given for this is lack of resources. But wouldnt it be better to be able to plan ahead for these “emergencies”?
This approach to maintenance with respect to HVAC systems is particularly troubling. Your HVAC system is responsible for more than 40 percent of your total energy use. Keeping HVAC systems running properly and at peak efficiency is key to saving you money and headache in the long run.
The importance of good HVAC system maintenance goes beyond just controlling energy use. Homes today depend on properly operating systems for more than just your family’s comfort. For example, most electronics, internet, and telephone systems have requirements for specific environmental conditions to operate properly. Temperatures and humidity levels that fall outside of this range can lead to interruption in services and even costly system failures.
Sometimes the difference between keeping a family or business running and having to shut down is nothing more than proper HVAC system maintenance. It is hard to remember because your HVAC system is not the most thought of component in your household. They are out of sight and out of mind… until there is a problem. By then, it is too late for a simple maintenance fix. You have to “react” to the issue at hand, and this usually can turn into a very costly mistake.
Families that have opted for a comprehensive, planned and predictive maintenance program show dramatic decreases in maintenance costs. And when factors are included, such as extended equipment life, reduced energy use, less frequent system downtime find that their total costs can be as much as 50 percent lower than the costs for those people who continue maintain equipment reactively.
