The Annual Morton Pumpkin Festival: Now celebrating it's 49th year from September 16-19 2015

Wednesday, August 26, 2015 | Comments (0)

Celebrating it's 49th year in a row, the Morton Chamber of Commerce proudly presents the Annual Pumpkin Festival!

Starting on September 12th with the Art and Photography show entries, the festivities take off with a bang on the 16th. Big events like the Pumpkin Princess or the Pumpkin Idol Jr. are only the start of the fun. Pumpkin grills, sweet shops, business expo, bingo, and so much more pumpkin goodness is just waiting to be had.

The Morton Pumpkin Festival has been a tradition since 1967 as a fundraiser and a celebration of the pumpkin harvest for the local Libby's Pumpkin Plant. in 1978, the governor of Illinois declared Morton the pumpkin capital of the world due to its 85 percent contribution to the world's pumpkins. Since then, with the help of over 2,000 volunteers every year, over 30 special events are hosted for a four day period of appreciation for the pumpkin.

While the festival is about fun and admiration of the town's bountiful pumpkin crops, it is also a vital part of the communities growth and connectivity to each other. The citizens of Morton take pride in their event while coming together as a group to make it the best they can every year. The festival is a chance for local business and community activists to come together in a fun, open setting to either advertise their services or just come together as a combined workforce that keeps the town of Morton strong.

As far as the event itself goes, there's a lot coming. The part most people enjoy most about the pumpkin is probably the taste, and the Morton Pumpkin festival doesn't leave out any option of enjoying it. Hearty, pumpkin based meals can be found at the Pumpkin grill which opens every day during the festivities, but when looking for something that brings out the sweetness of the squash, the Pumpkin Sweet Shop will open with plenty of options to choose from. So many things ranging from chili to ice cream, donuts and burgers, and of course, pie is just waiting to be eaten.

Each day is focused around a certain theme rather it be Senior appreciation or an all out kids day and is worth staying for the four days of pumpkin madness. Certified as the largest celebration of pumpkins, the Morton Annual Pumpkin Festival will be here rocking the squash for generations to come.

The celebration doesn't stop with the food, and there are multiple events for kids, adults, and seniors to enjoy. The big wheel race always brings out the best of competition in the youngsters, while Pumpkin Bingo can bring the heat for the older generation. Adults can enjoy live entertainment every day of the festival on our main stage, and connect with the locals as well as GARBER Heating and Air Conditioning at the Business Expo.

Springtime is also a great time to think about your air quality and what your plans are for dealing with allergy issues.  Your local HVAC company has a host of solutions for for indoor air quality and ventilation.

Home Automation - The Future... or Now???

Wednesday, January 28, 2015 | Comments (0)

So when we were kids, 2015 sounded like “the future”, as in hovercars and teleportation, instant meals, and space age living…

Maybe we over estimated, but we do have some things we saw on the Jetsons such as video chat, computerized everything, and cars that sometimes park themselves! Plus, HOME AUTOMATION!!!  Did you know home automation allows you to access and control critical systems and appliances from a remote or centralized location?  By using your smartphone, specialized apps, or a touchscreen thermostat you can set temperatures, turn off lights, set your security systems, open and close garage doors, and many other convenient home options. It may sound complicated – and maybe even unnecessary – but there are very real and immediate benefits to using home automation systems.

The number 1 reason? Convenience! Most home automation systems let you control what is happening in your home…whether you’re actually at home or not! You can turn alarms on or off from your smartphone, or control multiple audio and video devices with one button. You can set timers for almost anything. A great example would be to have everything preset for when you get home from work. The thermostat has already been adjusted to complement the cool night temperatures perfectly. You sit down and touch one button on an advanced remote that turns on your satellite TV, activates your favorite channel and launches your most used audio preset on your surround sound system. Almost Jetson like!

The second most valued reason: Security. Did you lock your doors? Did you shut the garage?  Need to open the back door for the kids?  All of this can be done remotely and automatically.  Imagine the peace of mind knowing you can check and secure your house from work or while on vacation. You can have live security feeds on your smartphone or computer. Home automation security systems make this all possible and easy.

Finally, it will save you money! Home automation can reduce your utility bills when managed properly. An intelligent thermostat can not only be set remotely, but can operate on week-long cycles to provide customized comfort to match the way you want to live. Turn your HVAC system down when on vacation, and have it return to your preferred temperature on the day you return. Your house now works with you to manage itself for optimal efficiency. It is genius!

You probably already use your smartphones or tablet to manage most of your life, so extending that to your home is an easy and exciting transition. More home automation manufacturers are designing smartphone apps that allow us to use the devices we already know and love instead of bulky custom controllers with non-intuitive interfaces. So if you think home automation is limited to a huge touchscreen remote that you’ll never use for anything else….think again!

Let us here at Garber help you decide which home automation device is worthwhile for your life.  We can direct and provide you with intelligent thermostats and other options to home automation. While it is not entirely the way we envisioned it as kids,  we are certainly closer! Contact us today to learn about real life home automation!

Dryer vents CAN and DO cause house fires.

Tuesday, January 13, 2015 | Comments (0)

Are your clothes taking longer to dry? Does your laundry room heat up when your dryer is running?

These are just a couple of signs that your dryer vent may be clogged or in need of cleaning.  Thousands of fires are sparked each day by clogged dryer vents.  It is not something that you think of on a daily basis,  so it is important to have your certified HVAC technicians out for routine maintenance.

Here are some of the signs that it's time to clean your vent:

  • Clothing does not dry completely after a normal drying cycle.
  • Drying time for clothing takes longer than 35 to 40 minutes in duration.
  • A musty odor is noticed in the clothing following the drying cycle.
  • Clothing seems unusually hot to the touch after a complete drying cycle.
  • The dryer vent hood flap does not properly open as it is designed to do during the operation of the dryer.
  • Debris is noticed within the outside dryer vent opening.
  • Excessive heat is noticed within the room in which the dryer is being operated.
  • Large amounts of lint accumulate in the lint trap for the dryer during operation.
  • A visible sign of lint and debris is noticed around the lint filter for the dryer.
  • Excessive odor is noticed from dryer sheets that are used during the drying cycle.
ABC News and Angie's list wrote a great article about the risks of dryer vent fires and how to prevent them. Read the article in its entirety here: http://www.abcactionnews.com/money/angies-list/thousands-of-fires-are-sparked-each-year-by-clogged-dryer-vents
